Adjustment of status currently runs about 8–24 months in the typical case, but that range hides more than it reveals. Two people who file on the same day at different offices, in different categories, can be a year apart. Understanding what drives the spread is more useful than memorising a number.
What the official estimate actually measures
The processing-times tool is not a forecast. It reports how long it took to complete a large share of cases that were recently finished at that office, in that category. It is history, not a promise, and it moves as the office's workload changes. A case filed today is not guaranteed the time shown today.
What actually drives the difference
- Which office has your case. Workload is not evenly distributed, and cases are sometimes transferred between offices mid-process
- Your category. Immediate relatives of US citizens are not subject to an annual cap; most other categories are, and wait on a priority date
- Whether an interview is required, and how booked that field office is
- Whether a request for evidence was issued: the clock effectively pauses while it is outstanding
- Background checks, which are outside the adjudicating officer's control
When you can actually do something
USCIS publishes a date alongside each estimate telling you when a case becomes old enough to ask about. Before that date, an enquiry will be closed without action. After it, you can submit a case inquiry, and that is the point at which a genuinely stuck case starts to move. Check that date rather than the headline range; it is the one that determines what you can do.
Keep your address current
The most common self-inflicted delay is a notice sent to an old address. USCIS treats it as delivered. If you move while a case is pending, update your address with USCIS, not only with the post office.
